When Sharma made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in
Kolkata in November
2013, it was during Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series. He hit 177, which
was second only to Shikhar
Dhawan's (187) greatest debut score for an Indian.
Sharma, who had not played for the Test team since 2017–18, was called up for a
recall earlier in the
year and embarked on the 2018–19 Australian tour. Chief selector M. S. K. Prasad
explained that his
natural style of play fits the bounce of the Australian pitches, which is why he
was called back.
During the 2020 Test series in Australia, he was named vice-captain of the
Indian squad, taking
Cheteshwar Pujara's place. He went on to achieve the milestone of 3,000 runs
in Test cricket and
score his maiden overseas Test century on September 4, 2021, at The Oval, with
an innings of 127
against England.

Virat Kohli, in
advance of a two-match series against Sri Lanka. His leadership was commended by
Sunil Gavaskar,
and the head of India's selectors, Chetan Sharma, stated: "We will
groom future captains under him.
"When the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers recruited Rohit in 2008 for a
reported US$750,000
per year, he entered the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was purchased by the
Mumbai Indians for
US$2 million at the 2011 auction. In the 2012 competition, he hit 109 (not out)
against the Kolkata
Knight Riders to record his lone IPL century.[93] Mumbai triumphed in the IPL in
2013, 2015, 2017,
2019, and 2020 when he was in charge. In addition, they won the Champions League
Twenty20
tournament in 2013. Rohit can bowl right arm off spin even though he is not a
regular bowler. He
has stated that he works extremely hard to develop this aspect of his game,
which is why he typically
fields in the slips.
